The Shop The Shop Inc.
DIRECT vs. QUOTE PORTAL

The Shop vs.
the platforms.

Xometry, Hubs (Protolabs), and Fictiv are real businesses doing real work. But they're not the same thing as a direct relationship with a machinist. Here's the honest breakdown.

01 / The comparison

Side by side.

What you care about
The Shop (direct)
Quote portals
Who quotes the part
The operator who will program & cut it
A pricing algorithm + sales engineer
DFM feedback
Real conversation before chips fly
Form-checked + escalation queue
Prototype → production
Same machines, same operator, same tolerance
Routed to whichever vendor wins the bid
Minimum order
1 piece. No surcharge.
Frequent prototype-vs-production split
Lead time honesty
Quote what we can hold
Algorithm-estimated; vendor-dependent
Repeat work efficiency
Faster every run — setups & programs on file
Re-quoted from scratch; may go to a new vendor
Phone call
Goes to a machinist
Routes to a CSR
Specialty work
Inconel, line boring, repair welding — yes
Often "no bid" or routes to a partner shop
02 / The honest take

When to pick which.

PICK A DIRECT SHOP WHEN
  • → The job is non-trivial — DFM matters
  • → You'll re-order the same part
  • → You're moving prototype → production
  • → You want to talk to the machinist
  • → Cost matters (no platform margin)
PICK A PORTAL WHEN
  • → Truly commodity, low-cost prototype
  • → Capacity surge — your shop is full
  • → You need 10 different processes at once
  • → Procurement requires a master vendor
  • → You don't need DFM input
03 / FAQ

Common questions.

Is The Shop on Xometry or Hubs? +
No. We work direct. The phone call goes to the operator; the quote is written by the operator; the part is cut by the operator. No platform middle layer.
Why would I work direct instead of through a portal? +
Lower cost (no platform margin), real DFM (you're talking to the machinist), recognized parts on repeat orders (program saved, fixture saved), and honest lead times. The trade-off: we're one shop with finite capacity.
When does a portal make more sense? +
Genuinely commodity work, sub-$100 prototypes you don't care about, and capacity surge when your trusted shop is full. Use the right tool for the job.
